I was thinking about what to blog about this week when I found this newly released clip.
If you don’t already know from the not-at-all over the top publicity promoting it, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II comes out November 16 (which is two weeks from right now). Knowing that, and with fair warning that yes, my blog post has a lot to do with that (though those who know should take note that the fact that only one blog post involves this would be very proud), enjoy…
Here’s my take on the cliché “it’s already November? Where has the year gone?” that we all inevitably muttered on Thursday when we went from the festivities and calorie intake of Halloween to the first day of the second to last month of 2012 (or, for those of us more apt to superstition, the second to last month until the end of the world (kidding). Regardless, I am a fan of November due to several wonderful things that occur during this month (in no particular order); the red holiday cups from Starbucks, going home for Thanksgiving, my birthday, and (and I’m being honest so I’m asking for this to be safe, no judgment zone here) the release of the last Twilight movie. While most people are asking themselves how on earth it’s already November, I’m asking myself how it’s already the release of the last movie, and here’s why…
When I was a sophomore in high school (once upon a time in 2007), my sister was reading the Twilight Saga, and she suggested that I read it (here’s where everybody who knows me right now is going to laugh or not believe me), to which I responded (when she told me it was about vampires), “that sounds really stupid.” I didn’t think anything else of it, I laughed at her once more when she freaked out about not being able to get Breaking Dawn at midnight because we would be out of town, and went on my merry way.
Fast-forwarding a year, in October 2008, my junior year of high school, my theatre department was getting ready to attend the Texas State Thespian Festival. Several people were upset because the first Twilight movie was being released that exact weekend, and so a group got together to plan a fun night during festival where they’d go to the midnight premiere together after the day’s activities. People were going to dress up, get excited, and have fun. Well, I like to have fun, too, and since (due to limited space and tickets), only people who had read the book would be allowed to go, I decided to read the book. I would say the rest is history (second cliché of this post), but most people reading this probably don’t know the history, so I’ll provide a quick synopsis (only the necessary details to avoid any (more) judgment). For the next two weeks, every theatre rehearsal (keep in mind I was the assistant stage manager…dedication to the play and its best (not)) consisted of me sitting at the director’s table devouring each of the four books. I was in love (and mildly…okay majorly…obsessed). Consequently, my 17th birthday fell the week after the first movie came out, and I probably didn’t receive one present that wasn’t from the Twilight section of Hot Topic (oh yes, with the movie release came my very first venture into Hot Topic, but that’s another story). Anyways, I went to the midnight release of the movie, and here is where this conversation occurred…
My friend Amanda (just as obsessed as I was) and I were sitting in the theatre waiting for the movie to start, talking about how we were going to make it our goal to see every midnight release of all four (later, as we found out, 5) movies together. When the subject of the last two or three came out, one of us mentioned how we’ll be in college by then (hence unable to see the movie together), to which the other replied, “College? That’s so far away from now!”
Well, it’s November 2012, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II (the last installment of the Twilight franchise) is coming out in two weeks, and not only am I in college, I am about to finish the first semester of my junior year, meaning I am more than halfway finished with college. I am also about to turn 21 years old, and although I am very excited for both, I also feel old (please, no eye rolling here). I don’t feel old as in elderly, I do realize I am in my early 20s and in college and nowhere near old age, but I also realize that time goes by fast. And, though it’s not the most conventional way, this will probably hit me around 2:00 AM on November 16, after I’ve just seen the last scene of the last Twilight movie. For those of you (which is probably most of you) probably about to (if you haven’t already) close this post and wonder why on earth I would spend a whole post dedicated to Twilight, look at this way: the one blog post dedicated to it is finished (except for the possible-maybe-I’m considering video blog while waiting in line at midnight…). And now back to your regularly scheduled programming…Happy Friday!
